Bishop Robert Barron to academics: debate Ross Douthat, don't dodge him

Los Angeles, Calif., Oct 31, 2015 / 04:09 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- Bishop Robert Barron has weighed in amid a media controversy after the Synod on the Family, saying some academic critics of New York Times columnist Ross Douthat are avoiding a good argument in countering his commentary on the synod, some bishops, and Pope Francis.

“Are all of Ross Douthat’s opinions on the Synod debatable? Of course,” the bishop continued. “Do I subscribe to everything he has said in this regard? No. But is he playing outside the rules of legitimate public discourse in such an egregious way that …read more

Denver, Colo., Oct 31, 2015 / 04:01 am (CNA/EWTN News).- For years, Cecilia Cunningham and her husband took their children trick-or-treating in their then-suburban Philadelphia neighborhood.

“It was the kind of neighborhood outside of Philadelphia where everybody knew each other, and it was a really fun neighborhood thing,” Cunningham told CNA. “People were just out talking while kids were trick or treating, and it had been really nice up until that point.”

When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears …read more

Exorcisms for entertainment? Terrible idea, St Louis archdiocese tells cable network

St. Louis, Mo., Oct 30, 2015 / 03:16 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- A television show’s promise of a live exorcism rite is more dangerous than it thinks, the St. Louis archdiocese warned on Thursday.

“Any attempt to use the solemn Rite of Exorcism as entertainment exposes all participants to the danger of future hidden satanic attack,” Bishop Robert Hermann said Oct. 29. “We cannot play games with Satan and expect to win.”

Bishop Hermann, an auxiliary bishop emeritus of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, said no exorcism can take place without the authority of the local Catholic ordinary.
